This study examined the attitudes towards breastfeeding of Portuguese health professionals working with pregnant or new mothers. An opportunistic sample of 64 nurses and 34 doctors answered an attitude questionnaire developed for this study. This questionnaire contained 43 items about breastfeeding and utilizes a five-point scale with levels of agreement between totally agree end totally disagree. Participants were selected from two maternities, three health centres and a nursing school in Lisbon. The analysis of results showed that attitudes towards breastfeeding were very positive. Nurses were likely to have more positive attitudes than doctors and subjects working in school also had more positive attitudes than those who work at the health centres (p<0.05).
