Abstract

HELENO, Maria Geralda Viana  and  SANTOS, Heloisa. Adaptation in HIV patients. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2004, vol.5, n.1, pp.87-91. ISSN 1645-0086.

The HIV attacks the immunological system and carriers are obliged to live with this chronic illness, implies in diverse physical, psychological, social and economic consequences. The adhesion to the treatment, as well as the awareness of the population about the prevention have been the biggest difficulties for those who daily deal with HIV, hence the persistence in searching the maximum of information for a more efficient prevention and treatment. The objective of this research was to know the adaptative effectiveness in patients with HIV. The study was developed in the Projeto Esperança, São Paulo (PROJESP) that takes care of patients with HIV. A total of 27 preventive clinical interviews was made and the data analyzed through the EDAO - Adaptive Operational Diagnostic Scale (Simon, 1989). The results showed that 77% of the patients had Severe and Serious Inefficacious Adaptation; 12% Light Inefficacious Adaptation and 11% Moderate Inefficacious Adaptation. These data showed that, in general, they had serious psychic conflicts. Their answers to the problems were inefficacious, causing displeasure and more conflicts. These results indicate the necessity of psychological intervention to improve the quality of life of these patients.

Keywords : Adaptative effectiveness; Adaptive Operational Diagnostic Scale (EDAO); HIV.
