Abstract

SOUZA, Camila B. de et al. An aspect of volunteer’s motivation that attends cancer patients: collaborative study between Portugal and Brazil. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2003, vol.4, n.2, pp.267-276. ISSN 1645-0086.

Brazil and Portugal, for reasons of history and immigration, share a similar culture and language. This is a inter cultural research for to compare a specific motivational processes and psychological functions involved in volunteer work. The work of volunteers is also a very important activity in the social support of cancer patients and needs further evaluation in both of countries. The objective of this research was to identify the structure of volunteers' motivation that attends to cancer patients and to compare differences and similar situations. Participants were 29 female volunteers from "Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro" and 21 female volunteers from "Rede Feminina de Combate so Cancer" in Brazil. The mean age was to Portugal 59.2y (SD=8.79), and 47.09 y (SD=11.0). The authors used the Volunteer Function Inventory (VFI) developed by Snyder et al., 1998, which proposes six personality/motivational categories for volunteer work. The results were analyzed by SPSS statistic software, using the t-Student. The results showed that despite the similar language there are significant differences between Brazilian volunteers and Portuguese volunteers. The differences are not in motivational process but are in degree of these processes.
