Abstract

BIZARRO, Luísa. Psychological well-being inadolescents with chronic kidney disease . Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2001, vol.2, n.2, pp.55-67. ISSN 1645-0086.

This study assesses psychological well-being in adolescents with chronic kidney disease. Most of the research until now has produced contradictory results. Some concluded that adolescents with a chronic disease are at greater risk for psychological well-being changes, but others suggest that although a chronic disease may be a difficult condition, it does not result in significant alterations when compared with healthy adolescents. In this work it was used an instrument for the assessment of adolescent psychological well-being that addresses two domains: psychological well-being as an absence of disturbance signs and psychological well-being as the presence of personal resources. Two groups of 12 to 18 years old adolescents were compared: one healthy group and other with chronic kidney disease and being dialysis dependent. It was also analysed the effect of age and timing of dialysis. Results showed significant differences in psychological well-being between both groups and also some pertinent aspects for those who want to plan psychological interventions directed adolescents with chronic kidney disease.
