Abstract

OUBRAYRIE-ROUSSEL, N.  and  SAFONT-MOTTAY, C.. Risk behaviour and low self-esteem: study on the toxic substance use (cigarettes, alcohol and drugs) of adolescent s students. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2001, vol.2, n.1, pp.59-75. ISSN 1645-0086.

The aims of this research are to identify risk behaviour, more specifically drug use (cigarette, alcohol, and drugs). Sample includes 2000 students aged between and 20 years, belonging to a country school, south east of France. The participants answer to a questionnaire design to access self-esteem, and to access drug use and violent behaviour. Results show statistically significant differences on early use of drugs (13 years) and other risk behaviour (violent behaviour) related to low self-esteem. Drug use seems to express low well-being, uncertain about the future and low control on everyday life situations. Results suggests that it is important to screen young people and the collaboration between family and teachers to protect young people from risk behaviour.

Keywords : Adolescence; Drug use; Risk behaviour; Violent behaviour.
