GOMES, Maria do Céu  e  RIBEIRO, J.. Relationship between self-concept and subjective well-being in male patients undergoing coronary artery bypass . Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2001, vol.2, n.1, pp.35-45. ISSN 1645-0086.

The aim of the present study is to identify the relationship between self-concept and subjective well-being and health perception. We assumed that all the variables are state variables (instead of trait), and that self-concept is more stable while subjective well being and health perception are more dependent on immediate context and events. Participants are 30 males aged between 40 and 77 years (M=59,16), that have been submitted to coronary artery bypass. Results show a strong relationship between self-concept, and subjective well-being and health perception. This association suggests that in terms of psychological intervention self-concept evaluation prior to surgery can facilitate in the orientation of post-operative recuperation, namely in the focus on psychological recovery which, as research has shown, is closely related to physical recovery. Therefore, improving self-concept would facilitate post-operative subjective well-being, permitting a more positive actual health perception and more positive future expectations.
