ARAUJO-SOARES, Vera  e  MCINTYRE, Teresa. You can live with pain!... Eficacy evaluation of a multimodal psychological intervention program in patients with chronic pain . Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2000, vol.1, n.1, pp.101-112. ISSN 1645-0086.

The main goal of this research was to evaluate a multimodal and multidisciplinary psychological intervention program in patients with chronic pain. After a comprehensive review of the chronic pain and psychological intervention literature an intervention manual was developed with the goal of testing its efficacy. The program was tested in Orthopaedics, Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Pain Clinic patients of two General Hospitals. The research design is quasi-experimental in nature, the sample consisted of 33 subjects in the experimental condition, and 36 in the control condition (wait-list), with ages between 18 and 72 and participation was voluntary. The initial evaluation of these two groups revealed that they were equivalent at pre-test. The patients of the experimental group were given a psychological intervention in addition to medical care, and the control group had only standard medical care. Thus, the main goal of this study was to test the efficacy of this program, as well as the synergistic effects of the combined intervention. Pre-post measures were taken. The results at post-test showed a reduction in the frequency and intensity of pain, in the levels of physical and psychological morbidity, suffering and depression with clear increases in terms of the coping strategies. These results confirm other results that highlighted the importance of the combination of interventions from the fields of medicine and psychology in treating chronic pain patients. These data point out the need to implement multidisciplinary and biopsycho social approaches in the treatment of chronic pain patients, especially in hospital settings.
