Abstract

MATOS, Isabel; LEAL, I.  and  RIBEIRO, J.. The assessment of femininity and motherhood: preliminary validation of an evaluation technique. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2000, vol.1, n.1, pp.69-77. ISSN 1645-0086.

The aims of the study is to analyze and discriminate two psychological factors or traits that we define as "Femininity" and "Motherhood", and that we believe may interfere with the ability or wish to conceive children. The hypothesis is based in the clinical practice in the area of women’s reproductive health, and in the recognition of the importance of such psychological factors or traits in women’s reactions to pregnancy, childbirth, infertility and reproductive technologies. For this purpose we developed an instrument for the assessment of these two factors, and we are trying to establish its psychometric and clinimetric validity. In this study, data are presented for a group of 22 mothers whose child presented some kind of behavior disturbance such as troubles in eating or sleeping. Evidence is presented to demonstrate the instrument has reasonable clinimetric validity, once the results are consistent with our predictions over this particular sample.

Keywords : Femininity; Motherhood; Assessment; Women’s reproductive health.
