In 1975, the editorin-chief of Modas & Bordados, Maria Antónia Fiadeiro, invites Maria Lamas (a reference for feminisms of the first half of the 20th century) to return as honorary director to the magazine she had managed between 1928 and 1947. A few days after the Carnation Revolution the magazine had committed itself to understand the situation of women in Portugal, to clarify and to encourage the fight for their rights in the context of a “new country”. Which problems became evident in this search? How were they framed and debated? Starting from this “new” purpose of the magazine, this article analyses qualitatively the scheduling of women’s emancipation and feminism in a sample of 165 articles published during the government of Marcelo Caetano (in the year 1968 and 1973) and after the Carnation Revolution (1974-1976).
