Abstract

PEREIRA, Ana Sofia Torres. Is cinema in Portugal gendered?. Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2019, n.Extra, pp.221-232. ISSN 0874-6885.

It has been broadly recognized that the number of women screenwriters and directors working in cinema worldwide is very low. The ways in which that may influence the cinematic culture and the way society views and construes gender is still, however, up for debate. In Portugal, the study of gender (on and off screen) is yet to be established and seems to be of little interest for the national diaspora. This article aims to help reverse this trend through the analysis of a numerical and percentage study of Portuguese women screenwriters and directors from 1961 to 2011.

Keywords : screenwriter; director; woman; gender; cinema.
