Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Ana Balona de. Imagine if truth was a woman... And why not? Entering sideways, or the gendering and the blackening of colonial, anti- and post-colonial histories in the work of Eurídice Kala aka Zaituna Kala. Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2019, n.Extra, pp.57-70. ISSN 0874-6885.

Drawing on Entre de lado, Measuring blackness and a guide to many other industries, and Imagine if truth was a woman... And why not?, I examine the ways in which the work of Eurídice Kala (Maputo, 1987)questions eurocentric and masculinist hegemonies. I argue that her practice is relevant for the deconstruction of ‘whitening’ versions of history - including the masculinism of many anti-colonial narratives - and the affirmation of an intersectional feminism. The analysis is underlined by the acknowledgement that the dialogue between artistic and historiographical practices can be productive, notably at the level of an epistemic decolonization.

Keywords : Eurídice Kala aka Zaituna Kala; the colonial, antiand post-colonial archive in contemporary art; photography, video, performance and installation; intersectional feminism; epistemic decolonization.
