Abstract

MONTEIRO, Natividade. Speaking of peace in a time of war: Feminism, Pacifism, and Nationalism (1914-1918). Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2019, n.41, pp.67-86. ISSN 0874-6885.

This article analyzes the speech and attitude of Portuguese feminists regarding Portugal’s intervention in World War I. Leading on from the reading of feminist periodicals of the time, as well as other sources authored by women, the aim is to reconstruct the voices speaking of peace and war, of patriotism and nationalism. Despite some diverging discourses, feminists came together in support of the war project of the Democratic Party, mobilizing the women in favour of the war effort and breaking the international commitments towards pacifism and suffragism of the International Women Suffrage Alliance.

Keywords : feminism; pacifism; nationalism; interventionism; World War I.
