Abstract

CABRERA, Ana. Gender inequality in academia: a case study on the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the University NOVA de Lisboa. Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2019, n.41, pp.47-66. ISSN 0874-6885.

The under- representation of women at the University level manifests itself both in horizontal segregation (disparity in choice of courses) and vertical glass ceiling that hinders women’s access to the top positions in the hierarchy of power and decision-making positions. This unbalance is the central subject of this article. After presenting a diagnosis of the gender inequality at the EU and Portugal context, we present an exploratory case study concerning the particular situation of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the New University of Lisbon. We conclude that women constitute the majority of the faculty members but remain a minority in the top places of their careers.

Keywords : Sub-representation; women; university; glass ceiling.
