Aspects of the intellectual biography of Virgínia Rau (1907-1973) are discussed here considering the relation between her life, marked by cosmopolitanism, and the main topics in her works: birth of merchant elites, long distance trade and economic institutions. Her role in the formation of a historiographic field in Portugal is also questioned
