Aiming to trace the route of the lesbian movement in Portugal this paper starts by analysing issues related to sexual orientation and visibility. The history of Clube Safo Association is central in this paper, as this is the only association in Portugal specifically directed to the defence of lesbian rights. To contextualize the lesbian movement in social movements in Portugal this paper presents reflections on the intersections, alliances and conflicts between lesbian associations and the LGBT and feminist movements. The paper concludes by presenting possible future scenarios of the lesbian movement in Portugal.
