Abstract

This paper shows the trajectory of the concept of gender in the social sciences, by highlighting some of the contextual dimensions that have influenced this trajectory and by noting the specificities of the Portuguese context. In the second section the paper is focused on the contributions of gender studies in the field of social psychology to understand relations of social inequality based on sex and on the development of new conceptual and theoretical lines. To conclude, the text emphasizes recent feminist critique, pointing out to future developments derived from current debates on gender and to the new territories this research field has opened to scientific knowledge.
