Abstract
MARQUES, Aldina; DUARTE, Isabel Margarida; PINTO, Alexandra Guedes and PINHO, Catarina. The construction of women’s identity in magazines during Estado Novo. Ex aequo [online]. 2019, n.39, pp.71-88. ISSN 0874-5560. https://doi.org/10.22355/exaequo.2019.39.05.
In order to understand the role of the periodic press during the Estado Novo dictatorship in the design and defense of an identity of the Portuguese Woman, the present study analyzes, in a linguistic-discursive perspective, the representation of women in a corpus of «Woman(en) Page(s)» and female editorials of the magazines Mundo Gráfico, A Esfera and Portugal Colonial. As magazines of the regime, the publications promoted idealized versions of Portugal and womanhood. The presence and participation of women is prototypically limited to entertainment and/or counseling editorials, diffusing the state propaganda and oblivious of the socio-political scenario of the time, were their absence implies segregation.
