Abstract

SILVA, Vera. Punishment and Control: Prisons for Women. Ex aequo [online]. 2013, n.28, pp.59-72. ISSN 0874-5560.

This article will consist in a feminist anthropological analysis about penitentiary regimes in the female prisons, more specifically in the portuguese context. For this purpose a reflexion about feminists perspectives in the studies of crime and punishment of women will be undertaken in order to contextualize the female prisons and the deriving devices of the prison regimes in the western contexts. Then, a brief approach to the penitentiary system in the feminine on the portuguese context will be made in order to, finally, propose a feminist anthropology of the prison in the referred context.

Keywords : punishment; control; domesticization; feminization; medicalization.
