SANTANA, Inayara Oliveira de et al. Elderly Woman: Life Experiences of institutionalization processFemmes Agées: Le Vécu Dans le Processus d’Institutionnalisation. Ex aequo [online]. 2012, n.26, pp.71-85. ISSN 0874-5560.

This research aimed at investigating the psychosocial aspects of the institutionalization process of the elderly women in Santo Antônio de Jesus, in the state of Bahia, in Brazil. It is a qualitative field research of transversal type. Seven women were interviewed aged between 62 and 93 years, all of them residents in an institution for elderly people. The data were submitted to the thematic content analysis. The results revealed that for five of the seven interviewees, the life in the institution was reported as good because they find the basic needs of their daily routine, as rest and food. The results brought to light elements representing the Brazilian lack of programs to support this population.

Keywords : women; elderly; gender; institutionalization.
