Abstract

This paper aims to study student-working women and comprehend their life conditions, through the analysis of the coexistence and/or conflict between womens socially recognized roles, such as being a woman, companion, worker and a student, simultaneously. The purpose of this project is to understand hidden ideas regarding their families, career, and the importance of being a student by using their personal time and space as a way to self-affirmation. Discourse analysis is the tool used to fulfil this objective. We consider that these womens path is done whilst facing the duality of home/job investment and family/school investment, themes that are usually discussed under the topic of family conciliation. This text was built based on the preliminary results of a study on student-working women at the University of Porto, during the year 2005/2006.
