Abstract

GOMES, Jorge F. S.  and  SOARES, Patrícia. Too much work: a killer or a pleasure? An empirical investigation of the antecedents and consequences of workaholism. Psicologia [online]. 2011, vol.25, n.1, pp.51-72. ISSN 0874-2049.

The goal of this research is to examine workaholism as far as its antecedents and consequences are concerned. The topic is generally understudied, and therefore the current research explored actors’ subjective views over relevant topics in the area. The current research used the Work Addiction Risk Test (Robinson, 1998) in order to identify workaholics in a cosmetics company. The individuals with the highest scores were later interviewed, in order to understand their accounts and views of the subject matters under study. Results are interesting since they allow building an initial picture of workaholism in the real world. Topics discussed are the concept of workaholism, its causes, its consequences, and what people think of the phenomenon.

Keywords : Workaholismo; work; burnout; work addiction.
