Abstract

GUINOTE, Ana; AVEIRO, Mafalda S. S.  and  MATA, Sandra C. da. Stereotypes and perception of group variability: the case of Angolans in Portugal. Psicologia [online]. 2002, vol.16, n.1, pp.199-208. ISSN 0874-2049.  https://doi.org/10.17575/rpsicol.v16i1.475.

The current article addresses ethnic perceptions of ingroup and outgroup variability in the Portuguese context. Angolan and Portuguese students living in Portugal participated in the study. Portuguese students perceived more ingroup than outgroup variability (the outgroup homogeneity effect) and Angolan students perceived more outgroup than ingroup variability (outgroup differentiation). Familiarity did not explain these results. Further explanations are discussed.

Keywords : Percepção de variabilidade de grupo; minorias; efeito de diferenciação do exogrupo.
