The scope of speech therapy is large and includes different pathologies. One of these is aphasia. Aphasia is a language disorder caused by brain damage and may involve different aspects of communication namely oral expression, language understanding, reading and writing. In this paper, the authors review the literature about the role of speech therapy in the rehabilitation of aphasia. This paper summarizes the efficacy studies on aphasia treatment conducted by national and foreign investigators, assessment and treatment of aphasia. As a final comment the authors hope that the number of professionals, specialized in this area, increase and that research in this issue help the aphasics to improve their quality of life.
