Abstract

CURRAL, Luís A.  and  CHAMBEL, Maria José. Cultural homogeneity and organizational structural configuration. Psicologia [online]. 1999, vol.13, n.1-2, pp.217-236. ISSN 0874-2049.  https://doi.org/10.17575/rpsicol.v13i1/2.567.

In this study we try to observe whether there is a match between the existence of one homogeneous culture or different subcultures and the structure configuration organizations have. We analysed six portuguese SME's following a case study methodology. After the caracterization of the structure configuration of each SME according to Mintzberg's structural model (1979) we identified the values and basic assumptions prevailing in each SME according to Schein's cultural model (1992) and the degree of sharing among members in different departments and hierarchy positions in the organization. Results sugest that structure may have an influence on culture homogeneity. The emergence of a single culture or differente subcultures seems to be dependent upon the type of structure configuration an organization has. We end with a sugestion that future research try to explain the processes through wich culture and structure have an impact on each other.

Keywords : Cultura organizacional; estrutura organizacional; homogeneidade cultural.
