Recent trends on the neo-institutionalistic perspectives are examined, particulary within the field of Organizational Analysis. More specifically a comparison is made between the economy of transaction costs as proposed by Williamson and the more sociologically oriented models. It is argued that these two approaches are more complementary than opposed in the sense that they are both adequate to describe and predict organizational practices. It all depends on the constraints exerted by the organizational environments either towards efficiency or effectiveness
