Context: Flushing of peripheral venous catheters (PVC) during intravenous administration is described as a preventive procedure for PVC-related complications. However, this practice is not adequately covered by international guidelines in terms of flushing volume, frequency and technique. Objectives: To map the existing evidence within the scope of PVC flushing. Review method: The scoping review protocol, based on the methodology proposed by Joanna Briggs Institute, was defined in order to answer the established questions, considering the criteria defined and the adequacy to the type of databases/repository to be used. Presentation and interpretation of the results: The mapping of the evidences will allow to identify the typology of studies, the characteristics of PVCs and other information inherent to flushing practice, such as volume, frequency and technique. Conclusion: It is expected that this review will be a starting point for the analysis and systematization of PVC flushing studies, allowing the identification of gaps and contributing to the optimization of this clinical practice, as well as to scientific research in this thematic scope.
