Therapeutic Houses are non-hospital arrangements for service users with mental health problems. However, their implementation process is complex, and nursing participation is important. The objectives of the study were: to describe nursing participation in providing social support to Therapeutic Houses for service users with mental health problems in the city of Duque de Caxias, and to discuss the circumstances of service users’ transfer to Flowers House in the same city. This was a study with a socio-historical perspective. Nursing involvement was revealed in the planning, coordination and implementation of Therapeutic Houses in the city of Duque de Caxias, state of Rio de Janeiro - Brazil. It was concluded that nursing is indispensable for the success of this policy, participating in the various arrangements that support the Therapeutic Houses.
