Hepatitis B is an important risk factor for healthcare students, because they are in permanent contact with patients through practical activities in healthcare facilities. The aim of this study was to verify the immunization status of healthcare students and describe their knowledge of the spread of hepatitis B. An immunization survey was conducted at the Federal University of São João Del Rei (UFSJ) in 2010. 392 questionnaires were administered to assess vaccination status. The data were processed using EpiData 3.1 and Epi Info 6.0. Analysis of vaccination status showed that 51.2% of students had had a complete course of hepatitis B vaccination. Among the respondents, 53.1% reported having had contact with perforating or cutting equipment, and 4.1% had suffered injuries during clinical practice, 91.3% demonstrated knowledge of contagion through cutting and piercing materials, while 6.6% reported not knowing the modes of transmission of the disease. Healthcare students of UFSJ are not adequately immunized against hepatitis B, and more than half have had contact with cutting or perforating equipment that exposes them to vulnerability during their education.
