Resumen

FRADIQUE, Maria de Jesus  y  MENDES, Luís. Effects of leadership in improving the quality of nursing care. Rev. Enf. Ref. [online]. 2013, vol.serIII, n.10, pp.45-53. ISSN 0874-0283.  https://doi.org/10.12707/RIII12133.

The development of quality systems in health, in accordance with the Nursing Council of the Portuguese Order of Nurses, is a priority and nurses play a key role in setting standards of quality of care. In the context of improving quality, the importance of the leadership factor is generally recognized, and takes in models of excellence including a leading role. However, in terms of research, the significance of this relationship still lacks sufficient empirical evidence, especially in the health sector, and there is a paucity of research concerning the influence of leadership in improving the quality of health care. The intention was to investigate whether the leadership perceived by nurses in nursing care providers influences improvement in the quality of nursing care. A questionnaire was administered to nurses at the Local Health Unit of Castelo Branco from August to October 2011, resulting in 184 validated questionnaires representing a response rate of 65.02%. The structural model clearly suggests that nursing leadership is directly related (ß = 0.724) with the quality of nursing care provided, which supports the ideas conveyed by the literature but lacks the empirical support
