Introduction: Acute Renal Insufficiency is a common complication in the hospital and its incidence varies with the severity of the patient’s underlying condition. Goals: To identify the main causes of Acute Renal Insufficiency in patients admitted to an intensive care unit and to describe the nursing interventions to address the causes of Acute Renal Insufficiency in an intensive care unit. Methodology: A literature review was conducted using the database of the Virtual Health Library, Brazilian Journal of Nephrology, Brazilian Review of Nursing and the Brazilian Review of Intensive Care. Results: The main causes were sepsis, septic shock, hemodynamic regulation, acid-base control e infection control. Conclusion: This study presents nursing actions based on the Nursing Intervention Classification - NIC, so that nurses can identify early, and systematically, changes in the patient’s clinic status in order to prevent renal disturbances and minimize complication.
