Resumen

OLIVEIRA, Amélia do Sameiro da Silva  y  MARTINS, José Carlos Amado. Being a nurse in Immediate Life Support: meaning of Experiences. Rev. Enf. Ref. [online]. 2013, vol.serIII, n.9, pp.115-124. ISSN 0874-0283.  https://doi.org/10.12707/RIII1287.

Context: The experience of working in an Immediate Life Support Ambulance context is relatively recent and is still poorly or not at all studied. The challenges to the nurse in this context are many, as are opportunities to improve. Aim: to understand the meaning of the experiences of nurses working in this specific context. Method: This is a phenomenological study, with data collection by semi-structured interviews. Nine interviews were conducted with nurses working in five Immediate Life Support ambulances, in September and October 2010. All interviews were audiotaped, transcribed and analysed following the steps established by Amadeo Giorgi. Results: Analysis of the findings identified five central themes: being a nurse in Immediate Life Support, notable positive experiences and notable negative experiences, development of technical, scientific and human skills, and social recognition. Conclusions: Because of their basic training and specific skills, nurses are an important human resource in pre-hospital emergency care. This is felt as a challenge, with the various experiences helping to build expertise and enhance the unique character of the care provided by nurses in pre-hospital emergencies.

Palabras clave : emergency nursing; emergency medical services; emergency medical system.
