Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Valéria Conceição de et al. Vaccine storage in the public health system: a integrative review. Rev. Enf. Ref. [online]. 2013, vol.serIII, n.9, pp.45-54. ISSN 0874-0283.  https://doi.org/10.12707/RIII1295.

Vaccine storage is a strategic necessity in order to maintain the effectiveness of vaccines and it is part of the activities of National Immunization Program (PNI). The objective of this research was to identify the problems listed in the literature on cold chain storage of vaccines in the public Brazilian health system. It was conducted using an integrative literature review of studies published since 1988 in MEDLINE, LILACS, SCIELO and BDENF. Ten studies were found, all of them quantitative and descriptive. Analysis of the sample identified many barriers that can compromise the quality of immunogenicity and a considerable increase in the costs of PNI, as well as unnecessary loss of vaccines, due to errors in cold chain maintenance. Care regarding the preservation of vaccines, which incorporates a series of activities in the practice of nursing, points to the need for continuing education of personnel, monitoring and evaluation of the work process and further studies in the area.
