Resumen

BARROSO, Teresa; MENDES, Aida  y  BARBOSA, António. Cultural adaptation and validation of the portuguese version of the Alcohol Expectations Scale: Adolescent Form. Rev. Enf. Ref. [online]. 2012, vol.serIII, n.8, pp.17-27. ISSN 0874-0283.  https://doi.org/10.12707/RIII1242.

Empirical studies have shown that alcohol expectations are acquired early in life, even before personal experiences of alcohol consumption. These expectations are important mediators of the onset and maintenance of alcohol consumption. In this regard, it is important to develop further research on alcohol expectations among teenagers and their role in the transition to their consumption patterns as adults. This article presents the translation and adaptation into Portuguese of the Alcohol Expectations Scale - Adolescent Form (AES-A). This process of adaptation included three studies with adolescents (n=654; n=205 and n=212). Internal consistency, construct validity and concurrent validity were assessed. The three psychometric studies resulted in the development of a Scale of Positive Alcohol Expectancies (EEPA-A/AES-A). It contains 49 Likert-type items, with good reliability (a = .82 to .85) and construct validity. Factor analysis showed the following four-factor structure: factor I - Facilitator of interpersonal relationships; factor II - Stimulation and tension reduction; factor III - Escape from negative emotional states; and factor IV - Change in social behaviour and sexual arousal. The EEPA has properties which demonstrate its value for analysing alcohol expectations among adolescents.

Palabras clave : adolescent; alcohol consumption; health promotion; validation studies.
