APOLINARIO, Marta Isabel Correia Gaio. Family-centered care: impact of training and a best practice guide in pediatrics. Rev. Enf. Ref. [online]. 2012, vol.serIII, n.7, pp.83-92. ISSN 0874-0283. https://doi.org/10.12707/RIII11145.
Family-centered care is a new concept in paediatric care in which family and child needs are central in the process. However, when it comes to reality, its application in hospital units still falls short, the effort to implement this care philosophy in nurses’ daily practice being at the early stages. A quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test kind with no control group study was undertaken, based on a quantitative methodology. The main goal of this approach was to evaluate the impact of training and a Best Practice Guide on nurses’ knowledge and their perceptions of the application of family-centred care in paediatrics. The sample consisted of 24 nurses in a pediatric unit, and they answered three questionnaires. Positive differences were confirmed between nurses’ knowledge about family-centred care and their perceptions in relation to the application of this philosophy in their daily practice before and after the training and implementation of the Best Practice Guide.
