Resumen

CAMPOS, Paulo Fernando de Souza. Social history of Brazilian nursing: afro-descendants and professional socialization post-1930. Rev. Enf. Ref. [online]. 2012, vol.serIII, n.6, pp.167-177. ISSN 0874-0283.  https://doi.org/10.12707/RIII12HM1.

This paper examines the social and historical process of the professional education of Brazilian nursing proposed by the official model of teaching after the Health Reform of 1920, the perspective of which excluded men and women afro-descendants from the profession. The aim of the study is to expand the debate related to representations constructed of afro-descendants after the First Republic (1889-1930), and their influences on the professional identity of nurses. Using the historical method, based on primary documents, it was possible to take into account the eugenic theories, typical of that time, that affected the professional education and orientation of nursing, and whose impact forged a professional identity focused on the image of white women. The conclusion of the study was that the Nursing School of São Paulo University restructured Brazilian Nursing by integrating black people into professional education in Brazil.

Palabras clave : history of nursing; nursing education; gender identity; schools, nursing.
