The transition to motherhood is characterized by an intense commitment and active involvement that requires the restructuring of responsibilities and behaviors. It includes tasks related to personal satisfaction, relationships with family and, partner, accepting the baby, and restructuring of maternal identity. While women do not develop the necessary expertise and particular ways of managing, health professionals are an important resource for the performance of the new role. The study aimed to analyze the contributions of the interventions of primary health care nurses in the transition to motherhood. It is a quasi-experimental and longitudinal study. With a 134 primiparous: the data were collected during the third trimester of pregnancy, and at the first and sixth months after delivery, using the Maternal Attitudes scale (Kumar, Robson and Smith, 1984), Portuguese version by Figueiredo, Mendonça e Sousa (2004). The independent variables were: individual consultation; childbirth/parenthood preparation course; and home visit.The results show positive development of adjustment of somatic symptoms and attitudes to the pregnancy and baby and negative development of body image and marital relationship. Nursing intervention had no significant effects.
