Abstract

CARVALHAIS, Maribel Domingues  and  SOUSA, Liliana. Promoting nursing care quality for hospitalized older people. Rev. Enf. Ref. [online]. 2011, vol.serIII, n.3, pp.75-84. ISSN 0874-0283.

Older people constitute the age group that make more use of hospital care. This exploratory study aims to contribute to the promotion of nursing care quality for older people in the context of hospitalisation. We adopted “photovoice”, a participatory method (qualitative) that uses photograph and voice to access the other’s world and make it accessible to us. The sample comprises three nurses (privileged informants) with experience in caring for older people in hospital settings, aged from 26 to 43 years old, 2 females. The main results suggest that promoting the quality of nursing care for older people in hospital involves more team work and decision-making, more material and human resources and better structural conditions. In addition, the main obstacle is centred on the scarcity of resources and disorganization. Participants underlined the relevance of the involvement of families, who are considered part of the care unit.

Keywords : nursing care; quality; hospitalized older people.
