Abstract

CARVALHO, Rui; PEREIRA, Ivo  and  ESPERANCA, José Paulo. The role of partnerships in the internationalization of Portuguese firms. Economia Global e Gestão [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.Especial, pp.9-29. ISSN 0873-7444.

This study analyzes the determinants in forming partnerships in internationalization processes, particularly for emerging markets. The study confirms a positive impact of the demand for skills in the process of forming partnerships. It was also shown that partnerships are negatively correlated to the learning degree from foreign direct investment processes. The study also confirms that the partnerships are greater in emerging markets, and that the establishment of partnerships is greater when the potential partner is a company based in the destination country. Finally, the study confirms the positive and statistically significant impact of partnership creation when the decision capacity (majority stake) is ensured by the multinational company.

Keywords : Internationalization; Partnerships; Knowledge; Self-regulation.
