Abstract

COSTA, Sidney  and  BORINI, Felipe Mendes. The importance of environmental determinism to the development of strategic alliances of foreign subsidiaries. Economia Global e Gestão [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.3, pp.33-51. ISSN 0873-7444.

The main objective of this paper is to analyze the impact of national environment, international environment and business networks in the development of strategic alliances of foreign subsidiaries. The article begins with the premise of the metanational model advocating that subsidiaries develop their capabilities both internally and externally through strategic alliances. It was developed a survey with the 1200 largest multinationals in order to answer to our prospects. We obtained 172 responses from subsidiaries. The result confirms the hypothesis and shows that the formation of strategic alliances of foreign subsidiaries is related to the favorable conditions of the national and international environment and with the presence of good partners in business networks. Finally, propositions are presented to discuss the role of multinationals in emerging markets, suggesting that alliances can foster innovation, fill institutional gaps, exploit externalities and the strengthening of relationships with interest groups.

Keywords : Strategic Alliances; Foreign Subsidiaries; Metanational Strategy; Environmental Determinism.
