REIS, Felipa Lopes dos  e  TORCATO, Silvia Mota. The impact of gender diversity in the efficiency of the management and in the performance of the European Union member states. Economia Global e Gestão [online]. 2010, vol.15, n.2, pp.73-89. ISSN 0873-7444.

This article aims to investigate the impact of gender diversity in the efficiency of the management, namely in the performance of the European Union Member States. In the present study two databases have been used: one concerning the percentage of women leaders of businesses and another one on the GNP per capita of EU Member States. Those databases were built on data collected from Eurostat publications and working documents of the Commission. Correlation tests were used to establish whether there is or not a relation between the variables identified. The results of the statistical tests had shown that the gender equality in business decision process has not yet been obtained. None of the twenty seven EU Member States presents rates close or superior to 50% and only a third of the Member States presents rates superior to 30%. Thus, it was not possible to establish a clear relation between the PNB per capita of the EU Member States and the percentage of women leaders of businesses. This study concludes that legal equal rights do not necessarily lead to gender equality in fact. The purpose of this paper is to promote the awareness of the under use of women's potential, in order to promote initiatives and actions that aim to reach a percentage between women and men in business decision process that can be considered as balanced.
