STAL, Eva e CAMPANARIO, Milton de Abreu. Multinational enterprises from emerging countries: technological capability and the growth of multilatinas . Economia Global e Gestão [online]. 2010, vol.15, n.1, pp.55-73. ISSN 0873-7444.
Multinational firms from Latin American countries are becoming relevant in the global trade. Since the 1970s, emerging countries companies started to internationalize, going in the opposite direction of traditional MNCs, which scattered through the world to take advantage of their financial, technological and managerial resources. In the 1980s, given their tiny local markets, Asian firms prevailed, exporting sophisticated products. As of the 1990s, economic liberalization in Latin America stimulated local firms to enhance products and processes to compete with foreign firms in the global market. However, the features of this movement have not been adequately explained. We present this phenomenon at the light of the main theories of international business, and stress some traits of emerging countries which may contribute to new conceptual propositions. Technological capability is considered an essential asset for the expansion of multilatinas.
