Abstract

RIOS, Luís Felipe. “Daddies”, “cubs” and the “symbiosis of love”: gender regulations among men frequenting the “bear” community in Recife (Brazil). Etnográfica [online]. 2018, vol.22, n.2, pp.281-302. ISSN 0873-6561.  https://doi.org/10.4000/etnografica.5347.

The text examines styles of being a man in the “bear” community (burly and hairy homosexual men) in Recife. It identifies among the bears a gender system that, in the regulation of sexual and affective relationships, stigmatizes femininity and uses meanings of age/kinship (autonomy/dependence) and sexual practices (“top”/“bottom”), expressed in “daddies”/“top”/autonomous and “cubs”/“bottom”/dependent. However, in everyday life, the binarisms and alignments are blurred by misalignments, hybridizations and positionalities expressed, for example, in the “neutral behavior” and “versatile sexual posture” categories.

Keywords : gender; sexuality; homosexuality; men.
