Abstract

PONTE, Cristina. A digital generation? The influence of the family on adolescents’ media experience. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2011, n.65, pp.31-50. ISSN 0873-6529.

Starting from the place of the media in definitions of “generation”, this article discusses the expression “digital generation” in relation to those born in the last two decades, with attention being paid to access and usage, national contexts and the family relationship. Discussion of the digital differentiation of the youngest members of Portuguese society is based on transnational research that allows us a comparative view. Recent results for Portugal in a European survey of internet access and usage among children and adolescents (aged 9-16 years) precede analyses of the life histories and media diets of adolescents (15-17 years) and their parents.

Keywords : adolescents and the internet; media; family; digital inclusion.
