Abstract

QUEIROS, João. Political strategies and urban regeneration policies: exploratory notes drawn from Porto’s case. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2007, n.55, pp.91-116. ISSN 0873-6529.

Focusing on Porto’s case, this paper explores the major guidelines of dominant tendencies in urban planning and management, which, as we know, are strongly influenced by the recent intensification of interurban competition and by the reinforcement of cities’ role as spaces of production and reproduction of the logics which structure contemporary capitalism. Based on both theoretical assessments and empirical data, the paper sets out the principles and scope of each one of the three generations of urban regeneration policies of Porto’s centre and, by doing so, it investigates the major transformations in local urban policies throughout the last decades.

Keywords : urban policies; new urbanism; urban regeneration; gentrification.
