CAETANO, Ana. Photographic practices and personal identity: (re)constructing identity through snapshot photography. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2007, n.55, pp.69-89. ISSN 0873-6529.
This paper is part of a research project developed with the goal of understanding the importance and transversality/universal dimension of common photographic practices that record people and events for later remembrance. Photography is mainly perceived as an instrument of high emotional value and it is practiced with the purpose of creating memories of important and happy moments in peoples lives, usually connected with leisure, family and friends. The greatest potential of photography is/lies in its contribution to the creation of representations of what people consider to be most significant in their lives; and it is precisely in this respect that we can call it an identity instrument.
