Is it possible to reconstitute forms of social stratification by means of registers of birth and baptism? Using data from a study of the inhabitants of the Alcântara neighbourhood in Lisbon at the turn of the 20^th century, this article proposes to argue that occupational status plays a dominant role in the development of factors of distinction between individuals or groups of individuals. However, a close examination of the way occupational status is self-designated leads to a reformulation of the hypothesis in which greater emphasis must be placed on the interaction between social factors of distinctions (occupational status and residential mobility, for example).
