The main purpose of this article is to identify remarriage trends in Portugal in the last two decades. Knowledge of the extent of this phenomenon, i.e. the number of remarriages as a percentage of the total number of marriages in Portugal, helped to identify these trends. A contribution was also made by a set of variables that, on the one hand, allowed the social characterisation of those who remarry to be ascertained and, on the other, allowed their different conjugal paths after divorce to be described. This involved such variables as age, education, occupation, marital status before remarriage, the length of the first marriage, cohabitation, and the children of the new and earlier marriages.
