The objective of this article is to propose a psychosociological model with which to analyse gender-based social relationships. In the first section we question some of the central concepts of social psychology, such as the sexual role and the sexual stereotype, and highlight the careless treatment that they have been given in ideology. We then take a sociological approach in order to question (in this case) women’s emancipation via salaried work. In doing so we particularly emphasise the way in which French sociologists have approached male domination. Finally, in order to illustrate our argument we present some data from a research project involving salaried women, in which we focus on their representations of themselves, work and salaries.
