The statistical data on the recent increase in immigration that has resulted from both the emergence of new flows (Eastern Europe) and the intensification of the traditional ones (Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa, and above all Brazil) are analysed in the light of the fact that Portugal is currently one of the European countries with the lowest percentage of foreigners among its resident population and at the same time the greatest exhaustion of the reserves of labour power in its domestic employment market.
