This article seeks to determine the influence social origins have on higher education paths. The author analyses the extent to which people from different social backgrounds (in terms of socio-professional and socio-educational variables) enjoy different probabilities of gaining access to higher education. She then goes on to characterise the conditions under which and the ways in which today’s undergraduates live. This perspective arises out of the notion of the existence of a "transition to adult life" and seeks to observe the various components of this process, especially those concerning scholastic/academic, vocational and family transitions. A third section analyses students’ aspirations and expectations in terms of their future professional insertion. It highlights both the elements that are common to all their representations and the areas in which they differ - the latter being reflected in their different aspirations and expectations.
